[WATCH] (Sigh)… here’s The Angry Birds Movie trailer

Video games are about to become hot property in Hollywood.

Oh we know that in the past movie adaptations of videogames have been astonishingly awful (see: Hitman: Agent 47, Need For Speed and pretty much every single film directed by Uwe Boll).

But the fact big games publishers (such as Ubisoft and Blizzard) are now taking a close, hands-on approach to how the movie adaptations of their IPs are being handled fills us with hope. We have to confess, we’re more than a little excited about the imminent arrivals of Assassin’s Creed, Uncharted and Warcraft next year.

We were less enthused by the news that Angry Birds would be receiving the silverscreen treatment. Boasting  a couple billion downloads, and enough re-hashing and sequels to make even the most jaded Hollywood producer blush, we were betting a movie based on Rovio’s Birds vs Pigs destruction-based game would be a quick cash grab.

The trailer, however, gives us pause for thought.

With our belly-aching aside (for now) what is actually in the two and a half minute trailer? Well, as we already knew, the titular birds are now anthropomorphic characters with Hollywood actors providing their voices. We see typical plot threads such as love, an embattled protaganist (the red bird) and some quirky characters.

The trailer also introduces the antagonist – the pigs – seemingly invading the home of the birds. We’re bitterly disappointed by the total absence of slingshots, though.

The story given in the trailer’s description is pure gold:

The movie takes us to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds – or almost entirely. In this paradise, Red (Jason Sudeikis – We’re the Millers, Horrible Bosses), a bird with a temper problem, speedy Chuck (Josh Gad in his first animated role since Frozen), and the volatile Bomb (Danny McBride – This is the End, Eastbound and Down) have always been outsiders. But when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs are up to.

It looks to be the basic “underdogs defeat the aliens” trope, but, you know, with birds and pigs…
