City of Joburg announces 100% free WiFi access in Braamfontein

If you happen to be in Braamfontein, you can now make use of free WiFi courtesy of the City of Joburg after it switched on the Braamfontein Wireless Mesh project yesterday.

The Braamfontein Wireless Mesh project is part of the metro’s Smart City initiative, which aims to have 1 000 free WiFi hotspots set up across the Joburg b the end of this year, allowing citizens to connect to the free service from the mobiles, laptops and PCs.

The city didn’t indicate exactly how many free WiFi hotspots are active, but did say that anyone who uses the service has an allocation of 300MB they can use a day. This is 50MB more than the City of Tshwane’s Free WiFi Project daily allowance 0f 250MB for citizens in the North Gauteng metro.

“We see this is as very transformative initiative that will turbo charge Joburg’s digital economy. We have set ourselves an ambitious target to get this going but it is really just the beginning, amazing things are coming and the Smart City is here, this is our vision for a world-class African City”, Parks Tau, executive mayor of the City of Joburg, said in a statement.

Up until now, Smart City free WiFi hotspots were only available at nine Rea Vaya bus stations across the city, as well as at 50% of all libraries and clinics across its seven regions.

The city also seems to be aiming at developing the Smart City WiFi project into something that will mirror the Tshwane project, with voice, video, data features to be added in the near future.

The planned roll out phases will include regions such as Zandspriut, Diepsloot, Orange Farm, Ivory Park, Pennyville, Lenasia and Ziberfontein.
