US cable news brings on an “expert” to discuss Edward Snowden on Twitter, talks about Edward Scissorhands instead

Yesterday social media was in the spotlight again as whistleblower Edward Snowden joined Twitter. As is par-for-the-course for these events, the media as a whole scrambled to cover the story.

Once again, as is the norm, news stations tap up experts on the subject of whatever story they’re covering to give context and explanations to their audiences. This is all well and good – unless your “expert” on the Edward Snowden goes by the Twitter handle @fart and he talks about Edward Scissorhands instead.

If it’s not apparent, @fart is actually a comedian named Jon Hendren whose Twitter page makes it look like he may know what he’s talking about. Heck, his bio even reads “award-winning IT security expert”, and no one lies on the internet, right?

The cable news channel guilty of this admittedly hilarious incident is HLN. From the get-go it was clear that anchorwoman Yasmin Vossoughian was trying to push the view that Snowden’s actions (letting the world know about the globally invasive spying activities of the US government) does not make him a hero, as it endangered lives. She also opined that Snowden’s asylum in Russia, a country notorious for its own human rights violations, was more than a little hypocritical.

We’ve embedded the video for you to watch, but we fear that it may be taken down due to copyright claims from HLN (it is filmed directly off of a TV), so below the video we have a transcription of the conversation that could have been from a movie:

Yasmin Vossoughian / HLN anchor, apparently:  There it is, there is classified information out there… do you think that Snowden’s actions were worth that risk?

Jon Hendren /@fart / Not an expert in this matter: Well, you know, to say that he couldn’t harm somebody with what he did, like, he could, absolutely he could have. But I think to cast him out, to make him invalid in society, simply because he has scissors for hands, I mean, that’s strange because people didn’t get scared until he started sculpting shrubs into dinosaur shapes and what not.

Well, now Snowden is now living in Russia…some people say it’s hypocritical, that Snowden has asylum in Russia, [as it] has a lot of human rights violations.

Well, yeah, casting him out is completely wrong, we’re treating him like an animal, like someone who should be quarantined and put away. Uh, just because he was created on top of a mountain by by Vincent Price, incomplete with scissors for hands and no heart, Edward Scizzorhands is a complete hero to me.

And what about the choice he made to live in a country like Russia?

I mean, where else is he going to go? You know? We cast him out. We got scared when he poked a hole in a waterbed with his scissor fingers, and that was unreasonable of us.

Vossoughian also almost completely ignores the obvious jabs from Hendren and continues the conversation like nothing out of the ordinary happened. She was either entirely not listening to what her guest was saying, or trying to remain professional in the situation. If the latter is the case, we have to wonder why Vossoughian simply didn’t end the piece and cut Hendren off.

Regardless, we now have this glorious piece of trolling from Mr. Fart, who reconfirms the phrase “trolling is a art”.
