With modern cars practically bristling with hi-tech hardware and software, the data these onboard computers produce and where it ends up has become an important issue. Some car manufacturers aren’t too keen on a second-party companies collating data on their vehicles and their customers’ driving habits.

Perhaps this is the reason Porsche is choosing to use Apple’s CarPlay over Android Auto in its new 911 Carrera and Carrera S. According to Motor Trend, Google wants too much data including “vehicle speed, throttle position, coolant and oil temp [and] engine revs”. The data would be sent to Google every time Android Auto was activated in the car.

Since Google is looking into manufacturing its own cars, Android Auto could enable Google to harvest information from potential competitors.

Porsche is going with Apple and its CarPlay system as apparently Apple only only wants to know whether or not the car is moving when the software is being used.

At the moment Android Auto is available in 11 different countries and is “coming soon” to almost 40 car manufacturers including the likes of VW, Ford and Audi. We don’t think these manufacturers would want another software snafu, especially after VW was caught cheating on emission tests.

While we do appreciate Porsche interest in keeping data sacred, it’s all a bit hollow. After all, the only way to not provide your data to anyone else is to completely disconnect from the internet. Good luck with that.
