Elite Dangerous is finally out on Xbox One

Space exploration and combat title Elite Dangerous (developed by Frontier Developments) officially been released for Xbox One yesterday, and while it has been in beta for a while, the full release makes a number of changes and brings in some new features for PC players.

New mode for all

As part of the full release and update 1.4, new players on PC, Mac and console get full access to the Close Quarter Combat (CQC) PvP mode. In this mode, you take on other pilots in a fight to the death for sweet rewards. The mode is separate from the main game, so you can’t use your regular ship for combat.

Clean slate for everyone

If you have been pouring hours and hours into exploring new planets and systems just to get your name on them, we have some bad news. With update 1.4, all of those discoveries are being wiped out.

But before you say that it isn’t fair, just think of all the new players that were never given a chance to discover new systems. And with 400 billion systems and stars to discover, there is more than enough for everyone.

If you are a first-time player, you’ll be given a small ship and 5 000 credits to start with.

Things that you get to keep

Don’t despair about losing all your heard-earned exploration data, as beta players get to keep virtually everything they had. Here’s the list:

  • The location that you last logged out from
  • All Ships, Modules, Cargo, Damage and Fuel
  • Ranks for Exploration, Trade, Combat and CQC
  • Powerplay Rating, Merits and Duration spent at that rating
  • Minor Faction reputation
  • Bounties, Fines, Vouchers and Permits.
  • Statics – Balance, Combat, Crime, Smuggling, Trading, Mining, Exploration, CQC Stats

However, if you log in after the update has been applied to your machine, your current missions would have expired and unsold exploration data will be removed and credited.

Restrictions on ships

To make things fair for new players, a number of rank restrictions have been placed on ships like the Imperial Courier and Clipper, and Federation Dropship, Assault Ship, and Gunship. If you owned the ships before the update, you’ll get to keep them. But going forward, you’ll need to be the right rank to buy them. If you lose any of the ships mentioned above while you don’t have the right rank, they will be gone for good – unless you have insurance.

In August this year Frontier announced that Elite will be getting an add-on of sort with the release of Elite Dangerous: Horizon, which comes out a bit later this year. The add-on, which is apparently the first of many, will allow space commanders to land on planets – something else that Elite players have been asking for.

“Scanning worlds will reveal all-new surface gameplay opportunities as players detect signals, crashed ships, mineral deposits, outposts and fortresses, and embark on raids on the surface. Playing alone, or with friends on the ground and in the skies above, players can explore, mine, engage hostile forces and attempt to infiltrate strongholds guarding valuable rewards,” Frontier explained.

Are you playing Elite: Dangerous at the moment? If you are, we’d love to hear your thoughts on this rather hefty update.
