The Mother City to get its own comic convention

It looks like Cape Town is the place to be in 2016 if you’re a nerd, geek, or sundry. First NAG announced that their long-running rAge expo would be going to the Mother City, and now Readers Den Comic Shop is starting a comic convention called FanCon.

The event, labelled as “Cape Town Comic Con” has been created in response to Free Comic Book Day (FCBD). The official Facebook page for the event reads:

Readers Den Comic Shop has successfully organised the FCBD event in Cape Town for the last 14 years. The explosive growth and popularity of the event over the last 5 years has however resulted in major problems with crowding, vendor and exhibitor space, as well as various logistical issues associated with the event being held at its current venue in Stadium on Main. We believe the time has come to take FCBD to the next level and, along with a change of venue, we also take the opportunity to expand and rebrand the event as FanCon: Cape Town Comic Con!

So it looks like overwhelming interest created by the prospect of free comics may be the midwife for the birth of a new mecca in African geekdom.

The very first FanCon will take place at the at the V&A Waterfront, from Saturday 7th May to Sunday 8th May 2016. We recently visited the Waterfront for Maker Faire Cape Town and we fell in love with the venue: ample space, airconditioning and a view to kill for make it a perfect locale for events of all kinds.

Not coincidentally, FanCon is happening on the same weekend as Free Comic Book Day. For 2016, FanCon and the FCBD events held by Readers Den will be merged into one, but for 2017 and 2018 the two will be separate again.

More details about FanCon will be released as time goes by, but keep checking the Facebook pagewebsite and, of course, htxt.africa for updates.

Readers Den isn’t new at creating South African versions of popular international phenomena, as they are partners for Geek Crate – a local spin of Loot Crate.
