WhatsApp now supports in-app translation for isiZulu and SeSotho

As of today, Google’s Android operating system will translate WhatsApp instant messages into 90 languages, which includes isiZulu and SeSotho, through an update to Google Translate.

Translations have also been included for travel app TripAdvisor and businesses connections website LinkedIn.

For now, the feature is only available to Android 6.0 users, and before you can get started, you’ll first have to have the Google Translate app on your phone.

To translate text from English to another language or vice versa, simply highlight the text, tap the drop down icon next to “share” and select “translate”. If you’re translating an outgoing text, you must follow this process before you send the message.

“This feature is already enabled in apps that use Android text selection behaviour. Developers who created custom text selection behaviour can also easily add the new feature,” Google said on its blog.

“More than 500 million people translate over 100 billion words a day on Google Translate. With updates like this one, plus features like conversation mode and instant camera translation, we’re making Translate available anywhere you need it,” the company added.

With this addition, WhatsApp has now caught up with WeChat, which added a translation function in June last year.

Google did not say whether or not this feature would be making its way to previous Android versions any time soon.
