[HANDS ON ] WWE 2K16 – First impressions from rAge

Fighting games are a ton of fun and if you can deny that you obviously haven’t had the satisfaction of wiping the living room floor with your opponents tears. We decided to get some hands on time with one of the fighting games at rAge, WWE 2K16.

To find the game at rAge you’ll need to head to the 2K stand and funnel into a curtained off area where you’ll be able to play a demo release of WWE. According to a 2K representative at the stand the game is complete but you will only able to play a few of the wrestlers.

We were lucky enough to play a few matches and we did have some fun but its clear this game is for select people.

What this means is that if you’re looking for a fast paced beat ’em up fighter that sees you throwing your opponent against walls and stringing together seemingly impossible combos, this is not the game for you.

To win a fight you need to be methodical and plan out every move you make in real time, we could even go so far as to say this is a RTS fighter because rushing in with little to no regard for your health will result in you screaming at your wrestler to stop napping.

At times the controls felt clunky and delayed but this is more about how the game works than a bug that slipped through quality control. Action animations take a while to complete as they would in real life and as your wrestler takes more damage they become fatigued. This fatigue has an effect moving, punching and throwing your opponent becomes more difficult.

As in previous WWE games you can once again interact with the environment by picking up steel stair cases, destroy the announcer table and use all of them to sow seeds of pain into your opponent.

The graphics of the game are good, you’re not going to experience jaw dropping realism but that’s not what you’re playing this game for. That being said, character models, the real reason you’ll want to play this game, are superb and the environment is well rendered. Crowd animations feel tacked repetitive and sort could have benefited from a more diverse range of animations.

Overall the game is well made, easy to play and will please the wrestling fans. If you prefer games like Street Fighter or even Mortal Kombat then you might want to steer clear of WWE 2K16.

This is just our opinion and if you want to find out more about the game get down to rAge this weekend at the Ticketpro Dome and play WWE 2K16 for yourself at Megarom, stand 59/85.
