YouTuber Sufficiently Advanced has built a working replica of Thor’s Hammer, complete with a mechanism that ensures only the “worthy” can pick it up.

While he hasn’t been able to give it the powers of lightning, flight and boomerang death, he’s ensured the part about it being too heavy for mortal man is true.

But Dwarven blacksmiths and Asgardian  metal played no part here, only simple maker ingenuity. Using a microwave transformer electromagnet, the hammer will be attracted to any metal surface once turned on, and will be nigh impossible to shift.

The only “worthy” person able to lift it is identified by a fingerprint scanner. The whole project is tied together with an Arduino Pro Mini and placed in a shell that hides all the electronic trickery.

Once the mighty weapon was forged, there was one more thing to do: take to the street to watch strangers give themselves hernias trying to lift it.

Thankfully, Sufficiently Advanced filmed the results for us to enjoy. To spoil some of the video, the hammer works exactly as intended as passers-by try and fail to attempt the feat, only to be embarrassed by the ease with which it can be lifted by the one with the worthy fingerprints.

It’s a good thing they didn’t come across any strongmen, though. As powerful as an electromagnet is, sufficient strength could actually separate the magnet from metal. A cheat to the trick would simply be to slide the magnet off of the metal, giving it nothing to hold on to, as the final hopeful did:

It seems The Avengers and their tech are popular projects to replicate, as someone created a full, working “costume” based off of the Hulkbuster Iron Man suit for New York Comic Con, complete with stilts that make the wearer over nine feet tall.

Do yourself a favour and check it out, it’s pretty awesome. Almost as awesome as someone having made a “working” Mjolnir replica.
