New Apple iMac family boasts 4K and 5K displays

The entire Apple iMac range got a reboot today when the Cupertino firm announced a new 21.5inch iMac with a 4K display, and updated the 27inch iMac to a massive 5K display. That’s 5120×2880 pixels, which works out to a smartphone-rivalling 217 pixels-per-inch (ppi).

“From the first iMac to today, the spirit of iMac has never wavered — deliver the ultimate desktop experience with the latest technologies, gorgeous displays and cutting-edge designs,” said Apple senior vice president of worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller in a statement.

A big display needs big specifications and Apple has not disappointed. The 27-inch iMac will house a sixth generation Core processor capable of speeds up to 4.0GHz and AMD high-performance graphics delivering compute speeds of up to 3.7 teraflops.

The 21.5-inch iMac has also received an upgrade of a fifth generation Intel Core processor and the latest Intel Iris Pro graphics.

Interface options have also been given an update with all iMacs feature two Thunderbolt 2 ports for transfer speeds of up to 20Gbps. Apple also boasts that WiFi speeds of up to 1.3Gbps are now supported across the iMac family as well.

The firm also added a new “Fusion Drive” for storage, which is essentially a hybrid hard drive that combines spinning platters with fast solid state storage in the form of flash memory for caching regularly used files and buffering write operations to accelerate overall speeds. This will be available in three configurations: these are a 1TB magnetic drive with 24GB of flash memory; a 2TB with 128GB flash; and a massive 3TB with 128GB flash. For those looking to ditch mechanical hard drives altogether Apple does offer the option of having a 1TB Fast Flash drive supposedly capable of 2.5 times the speed of regular hard drives.

The latest version of OS X, El Capitan was designed to run on the new iMac family and as such will be included with every new iMac.

There will be three versions of the 27inch 5K Retina display iMac each with various technical specifications. There’s no word on local pricing yet, but this is the UK prices with straight conversions – we’ll update later today. Prices will start at £1 449 (R29 656), £1 599 (R32 770) and £1 849 (R37 894).

The 21.5inch iMac will also be available in three iterations with pricing starting at £899 (R18 424), £1 049 (R21 498) and £1 199 (R24 572) depending on the specifications you want.

Users will also receive the new Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse 2 with every 21.5inch or 27inch iMac
