These are the most downloaded and fastest growing apps in SA

Facebook’s flagship app and its subsidiaries, Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are the top four most-downloaded apps in South Africa, according to a report.

The South African Social Media Landscape report released today by World Wide Worx and media analytics company Fuseware, provides insight into the social media trends among smartphone users in the country.

The report was compiled using consumer data from seven major social networks listed in three app stores and a corporate survey conducted with over 100 top local brands.

In the iTunes App Store, WhatsApp, Facebook, Facebook Messenger and Instagram make up the top four. The Google Play Store, meanwhile, WhatsApp is in first place followed by Instagram, Facebook Messenger and Facebook.

The Windows Phone Store is the only one among the three researched app stores which only features one of the above apps. Facebook tops the store’s downloads, followed by the Microsoft Podcast app, WhatsApp, OneDrive and Skype. According to the report, the dominance of the Microsoft apps can be attributed to the company’s marketing emphasis.

“It can be argued that Facebook currently owns mobile – but not necessarily its revenue,” Arthur Goldstuck, MD of World Wide Worx said in a statement. “Games completely dominate the top ten lists for highest grossing apps on iOS and Android, filling the entire top ten on each, as well as the top eight in the Windows Store.”

The report also revealed active user growth among Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube.

Facebook use in South Africa grew 8% in the last year from 12 million to 13 million people, Twitter grew its SA userbase 12%, going from 6.6 million to 7.4 million South African users, and YouTube’s user base grew by 15% to 8.28 million users.

Instagram saw the biggest growth, however, sky-rocketing by 133% from 1.1-million to 2.68 million South African Instagrammers between 2014 and 2015.
