Assassin’s Creed Syndicate’s day one patch isn’t 18GB

Earlier this week it was rumoured that Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, the upcoming jumpy-stabby-parkour-fest set in Victorian-era London would get an 18GB day one patch, but that has thankfully been proven false.

While the game will get a day one patch – boo! – it weighs in at just 500-odd megabytes. That’s quite a relief to many who didn’t like the idea of rushing home from a midnight launch only to sit in front of their consoles for hours as the ludicrously-sized patch trickled down.

To put that into context, an 18GB patch would have taken 12 and a half hours to download on a 4mbps connection, which is itself 0.4mbps faster than the country’s average (according to Wikipedia).

Fortunately, the patch size is indeed more manageable; even on an average connection, 500MB should take no more than half an hour to download.

Let’s hope this patch means players will be dealing with fewer glitches than they did with last year’s Assassin’s Creed, which was roundly derided for the slew of bugs that haunted its initial release. They produced everything from a hovering Arno Dorian to character models that showed floating eyeballs instead of heads to crowds that wouldn’t behave; it was funny, sure, but it also – understandably – made a lot of fans angry, so hopefully Ubisoft has learned from its mistakes.

While you wait for Syndicate to hit the shops on Friday, here’s the latest trailer for the game:
