Sony shows off VR games, new IPs at Paris Games Week

You may have noticed Sony was rather absent at Gamescom and EGX; no keynotes, no big reveals and no new announcements at either expo.

That’s because the company was saving itself for Paris Game Week which kicked off earlier this week.

Last night, Sony finally put on its Paris Game Week conference and handed out some pretty juicy details on its upcoming game line-up. We’ve put together this list of the most interesting announcements made during the presentation.

Detroit: Become Human

There will be another game from nobody’s everybody’s favourite interactive storyteller David Cage; it’s called Detroit: Become Human. The game centres around an android of the future and how it develops feelings and goes off on a search for the meaning of life.

Because, you know, David Cage. (Emotions! Emotions of your face, press X!)

It’s based on the Kara tech demo, in which human faces were rendered as close to reality as possible. Sony also announced that the PS4 re-releases of two of Cage’s previous games, Beyond: Two Souls and Heavy Rain, would be playable at the conference.

No Man’s Sky

Finally, Sony has told the world when the highly-anticipated No Man’s Sky will come out. The answer: June 2016. No Man’s Sky has attracted a lot of attention for its massive, sprawling open world/galaxy exploration that will allow players to fly around a procedurally-generated galaxy in a ship of their own design, and even land on and explore fully-populated planets seamlessly.

GT Sport

Gran Turismo is finally making an appearance on the PlayStation 4, and it looks mighty fine indeed. This time, you won’t be trundling around tracks in cars that are better-suited to soccer-mom runs and grocery shopping as the game focuses on beefy, muscular sports cars. Expect amazing graphics, plenty of tracks and the realistic handling the Gran Turismo series is known for. Also, support for PlayStation VR!

Uncharted 4 Multiplayer trailer

As if we weren’t excited enough for Uncharted 4’s November launch, Sony teased fans even more with the first unveiling of the game’s multiplayer mode which apparently includes supernatural elements and some sort of grappling hook. Plus, it’ll run at 1080p and 60 frames per second, an astonishing feat for such a beautiful-looking game.

Horizon: Zero Dawn

New IPs are about as scarce as accountability in politics these days, so when Sony showed off some gameplay footage of a new open world sci-fi action game Horizon: Zero Dawn, we sat up and took notice. And so should you, it looks incredible! This footage was previously only seen by journalists behind closed doors.

PlayStation VR highlights

Sony also shared more about its PlayStation VR plans, including a video from Until Dawn’s creators talking about Rush of Blood, a VR-only Until Dawn tie-in game and a dinosaur-themed VR game from Crytek, the people behind the Crysis series. As if I wasn’t excited enough for virtual reality in general, these videos gave me even more to be happy about.

There was plenty more to see from Sony, so if you’d like to watch it all I suggest setting aside a couple of hours and watching the whole presentation from start to finish.

The thing I love so much about gaming in 2015 is that no matter your preferred platform, you’re a winner because every one has games to recommend it. Sony’s line-up is looking particularly strong, though, and PlayStation 4 owners have a lot to look forward to in the next year, even without PlayStation VR.

Good times.
