Traffic light outages in Sandton will soon be a thing of the past

Soon your drive through the Sandton CBD will be a little less frustrating, especially during peak hours when there’s loadshedding or heavy rain, as the City of Joburg plans to install Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) signals in the suburb centre’s traffic lights.

This was revealed today at the city’s official Ecomobility Festival closing media briefing keynoted by executive mayor Parks Tau.

Essentially, UPS means that traffic lights will keep operating normally despite any circumstances that would normally cause outages which result in massive traffic in the already heavily-congested area.

The UPS project is being carried out by in partnership with the Sandton Management District; the city did not say exactly how many UPS-equipped traffic lights would be installed.

The city also said it will be creating wider sidewalks along West and Maude streets as well as cycle lanes on both sides of each street “…to ensure that the large number of people walking on these streets can do so safely and with ease”.

Construction will also continue on the R130 million, five-kilometre M1 cycling and walking bridge that will link Alexandra township and Sandton. This is the same bridge that was recently in the news after scaffolding collapsed, killing three people in vehicles travelling on the M1 highway.

“The city will continue to ensure that all competent authorities grant the necessary approvals when the construction of the bridge section commences,” the city said in a statement. “The Department of Labour will also now approve all designs. The Johannesburg Development Agency will be fully involved in the Department of Labour inquiry on the collapse of the scaffolding for this bridge and the independent investigation commissioned by the City is continuing.”
