Got money to burn? Need a new laptop? Love Star Wars to the point where you want it infused with every part of your life? Well then HP has you covered with its new special edition notebook. And it’s not just a lid decal or a fancy wallpaper, as HP and Disney has been very generous with The Force here.

The outside of the laptop actually has the least amount of detail with the lid featuring faux “battle damage” with Darth Vader peering out at you. Engadget also reported that the hinge has the words “Galactic Empire” in a font similar to Aurebesh, a writing system used in-universe.

Open it up and the real show begins.  The 15″ touchscreen isn’t very Star Warsy until you get into all the exclusive content that comes pre-loaded. You’ll find 1 100 images that include: concept art, behind-the-scenes photos, set designs, costumes, models, wallpapers and more. There’s also e-book excerpts from Star Wars literature, a Marvel comic, and trailers.

While this content may excite you, don’t be surprised to find that someone puts it on the internet for everyone to access once the laptop is released around November 8th.

Other software includes certain system icons (the trash bin is the Death Star, because why not), an Aurebesh system font and iconic sound effects for certain actions. Want your PC to beep like R2-D2 when you insert a USB? You can do that here.

The red backlit keyboard again features that Aurebesh font and, below that, the trackpad has a print that apes the design of the targeting computer used in the trench run. Surrounding the keyboard and trackpad is the continued, worn design from the lid, this time featuring the Death Star and Storm Troopers.

Separate from the laptop, even the packaging is special. The box is ornate featuring good ol’ Darth and, get this, the packaging foam is shaped like a TE fighter. There is also a branded sleeve and wireless mouse which are sold separately.

Now, with all the aesthetics put aside, what’s under the hood? Unfortunately, the lack of gaming power here is disturbing:

  • Operating System: Windows 10.
  • CPU: 6th gen Core i5, Core  i7 also available.
  • RAM: Up to 12GB.
  • Storage: 1TB or 2TB hard disk.
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 940M GPU (may be optional).
  • Screen: 15″ Full HD.

At $700 (R9 437, which is not including the markup we get in South Africa, delivery costs or the optional upgrades), this laptop is rather lacking. While it will probably be fine for general use, it’s not going to take you far with games. While Star Wars: Battlefront does apparently work well on lower-end PCs (which this is), you won’t get to max the settings.
