Star Wars ticket sales smash SA box office record on first day of opening

When Ster Kinekor opened ticket sales for Star Wars: The Force Awakens online, South Africans not only took advantage of it, but managed to break the record for first day ticket sales in the process.

According to the entertainment company, 2 299 tickets were sold on Monday, beating the previous record of 1 489 tickets set by Fifty Shades of Grey in February this year.

Viewers seem particularly interested in having the best viewing experience possible when catching all the action this December as tickets for Ster Kinekor’s five IMAX 3D theatre were booked the most at 1 387.

According to IMDb, Fifty Shades of Grey sits at number 28 on the list of highest ever grossing films in South African box office history.

At the rate Star Wars ticket sales are going, and considering sales yet to be released by Nu Metro, the movie will very likely surpass that in the next months. The movie title of highest ever grossing movie released locally currently belongs to Titanic (R112.3 million).

You can book your ticket at either a 2D, 3D or IMAX 3D theatre near you. Star Wars: The Force Awakens will premier in South Africa and across the globe on 16th December. If you haven’t seen the movie trailer yet, you can do so in this previous htxt.africa article.
