Total offering R1.2m prize money in big 2016 startup competition

The Total Group is looking for Africa’s most innovative startups, and is holding the Total Startupper Of the Year competition to find them.

The company is seeking innovative projects that have the potential to make people’s lives better, and wants to use the contest to identify and reward startups “…in enterprise creation and development” that are just getting going.

A jury of professionals will preselect up to ten of the best projects from South Africa based on the following criteria: how innovative, original, daring the project is, its development potential and its capacity to improve the living conditions of the populations.

The reward for winning is a share of a pretty healthy R1.2 million prize pool, but that’s only part of the prize – the winner will be awarded the title of “Startup of the Year 2016” and be enrolled in a business coaching course which should really help to get their idea off the ground.

The competition will take place in 2016, but in the meantime startups that are less than two years old can register for the contest if they think they have what Total is looking for.

The contest has been initiated in 34 African countries simultaneously, so there’s going to be a lot of competition. Startups that believe they have what it takes have until the 31st of January at 11pm CET to register, which be found here.

If you’d like to read the full rules of the competition, you’ll find them on the website.
