Terminally ill Star Wars fan gets to see the new film

File this under “great job, internet!”: Daniel Fleetwood, a man from the US state of Texas, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and given two months to live back in July. Fleetwood, a lifelong Star Wars fan was quite excited for the upcoming Episode VII – The Force Awakens, which is only due to be released in December this year.

The possibility of Fleetwood not living long enough to see the new movie was very real, but thanks to the powers of the internet, some celebrities and (we assume) The Force, Fleetwood got to watch an unedited version of the movie.

The campaign that lead to this was started by Fleetwood’s partner, Ashley Fleetwood, and friends’ variations of a hashtage called “#ForceforDaniel“. The hashtag was picked up and retweeted by Star Wars actors Mark Hamil, Peter Mayhew and John Boyega.

With Disney, Lucas Arts and other entities holding such a tight grip on the new movie, getting the request through seemed like a big ask. But today Ashley Fleet brought home the good news with a post on Facebook.

If you came for spoilers or details about the next step in the franchise, you’ll find none here. We imagine Daniel Fleetwood had to sign myriad legal agreements preventing him from talking about the movie, and besides, any real Star Wars fan knows that spoilers are the path to the Dark Side.
