Here’s how to get an iPhone 6S for nearly R1 000 less than anywhere else

For just shy of a month, South Africans have been enjoying the latest Apple smartphones, the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 6S Plus.

The smartphones feature the latest Apple A9 processor, 7000-series aluminium and new software additions like Live Photos.

There are of course those who would like to enjoy the new smartphone and all these new features at a slightly discounted price, but that may still be a way away.

For example, online retailer Takealot currently lists the 16GB version of the iPhone 6S at a cash price of R11 739. South African Apple premium reseller, iStore, has the iPhone 6S 16GB listed for a slightly higher R11 799.

With this in mind we decided to take a look at what you would have paid once a 24-month contract with South Africa’s biggest network operators had concluded. We then compared that with the current cash price of the iPhone 6S, and this is what we found.

Getting the iPhone 6S 16GB on a Cell C EPIC 150 contract over 24 months would mean that you save R963 on the smartphone and you don’t have to put down R10 776 right now. This price does not, however, account for the R114 once-off SIM activation fee but even when included you still save R849.

Prefer a larger display?

The much larger iPhone 6S Plus 16GB is currently listed on Takealot for R13 999, though this is an import which may skew the price slightly. The iStore lists the 5.5inch iPhone 6S Plus for R13 599.

The price per month for a 24-month contract from each of the network operators as well as the total after the end of the contract is reached is included below.

Once again Cell C comes out as the cheapest with a total price of R12 696.00 over 24-months, a saving of R1 301. We should note that MTN comes in at  R183 below our cheapest cash price which, though a small saving, is a saving nonetheless.

We’ve contacted Cell C to find out why exactly its contract pricing is so much lower than the retail price, but at time of writing they have not responded; we will update this story once they have.

For possibly the first time in history, it actually makes more sense to buy on credit when it comes buying an iPhone 6S or iPhone 6S Plus.
