City of Tshwane doubles daily free WiFi data limit for residents

The City of Tshwane has just announced one of the biggest developments for the Project Isizwe Tshwane Free WiFi service since its inception in 2013.

The city’s executive mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa announced during a media briefing in Pretoria that as of today, the city has doubled the daily data limit from 250MB to 500MB per user.

This amounts to around 16GB of data per month, if you were to use the service and reach the daily cap, everyday.

According to a tweet from project Isizwe, this move is an answer to residents’ calls for an extension on the daily data allowance.

Additionally, the City has plans to allow users who register and have fully settled their municipal accounts to be given 15GB extra data per month.

A group of users we spoke to earlier this year during a visit to the Project Isizwe offices and some of the WiFi sites in the Pretoria CBD, had also shared their desires to see the cap lifted beyond 250MB.

Before this announcement, the City of Joburg offered a slightly higher data cap at 300MB at its more than 130 hotspots around the metro. This now puts Tshwane way ahead of the bigger metro in terms of free WiFi data limits. Hopefully this oneupmanship continues if it means better and better access: if only all service delivery was improved in this way.
