Leave your smartphone at home with cellular enabled Android Wear

Google has announced that Android Wear will now be able to operate without the need to be tethered to your smartphone.

For as long as wearables have been on the market they have been able to connect to the internet using Wifi or communicate with your phone over Bluetooth so you’re able to see messages and notifications. The trouble was that your phone needed to be near the wearable for this to work.

“No more worrying about Bluetooth or Wi-Fi” product manager for Android Wear, Peter Ludwig said in a statement, “your watch will automatically switch to a cellular connection when you’re out of range[of your smartphone].”

You could leave your smartphone at home because of this but latest version of Android Wear does require that both your wearable and smartphone are connected to a cellular network.

Should this not be an issue for you, you’ll be able to send and receive messages, or making calls right from your wrist, which will finally fulfill those Knight Rider fantasies we all secretly have.

We will get our first taste of this independent wearable age when the LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition with LTE support, launches internationally in the coming months.
