Gauteng province allocates extra R200m for more paperless classrooms

The Gauteng provincial government’s finance department has allocated R200 million to put paperless classrooms in more schools in the province.

Finance MEC, Barbara Creecy, outlined this initiative in her medium-term budget speech delivered at the Gauteng Legislature in Johannesburg yesterday.

Earlier this year, the Gauteng Department of Education began with its plans to distribute interactive whiteboards, tablets and laptops in 375 schools in the province.

“We are setting aside a further R200 million per annum for our smart schools project to enable the Department of Education to expand access to the programme in January 2016,” said Creecy.

At the paperless classrooms launch in February at the Boitumelong Secondary School, Gauteng education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi had said the project would need around R17bn to implement across the province by the end of the 2017/18 financial year.

The province also allocated R160 million towards the education department’s municipal service account.

“The intention here is to ensure that the department does not accumulate further municipal debt,” Creecy added.
