Facebook’s Safety Check activated for Nigeria bombing

Safety Check – a feature Facebook introduced to let users know that loved ones were safe during a natural disaster – has been activated for the second time this week after a bombing at a Nigerian market.

Originally, Safety Check was intended for use after natural disasters, but Facebook changed this policy after the terrorist attacks in Paris. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the feature will now be used for all “human disasters”.

The move was met with criticism from some quarters with many questioning why the company had not enabled the feature for other terrorist attacks,  like the bombings in Beirut.

“After the Paris attacks last week, we made the decision to use Safety Check for more tragic events like this going forward,” said Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook,  “We’re now working quickly to develop criteria for the new policy and determine when and how this service can be most useful.”

Ongoing crisis such as war or epidemics may be ruled out of this criteria, as vice president of Facebook’s growth, Alex Schultz, has stated that the current form of the system would not be useful in those situations.

With only two non-natural disaster prompting its use, it’s still unclear as to what may prompt Facebook to activate Safety Check in the future.
