Sony says it’s sold more than 30 million PlayStation 4 consoles

Sony has announced that sales of its PlayStation 4 have surpassed the 30 million unit mark.

To put that into perspective, that’s a consumer base roughly seven-and-a-half times the size of the population of Johannesburg, going by the last census taken in 2011. Or about the same amount as the global player base for Blizzard’s card battling game, Hearthstone.

This pretty much puts Sony in pole-position in the latest console wars with Microsoft’s Xbox One trailing at around 15.5 million units sold and Nintendo’s Wii U lagging in third place at around 11 million. Sony has no doubt been helped by the fact that many games available on the PS4 run at 1080p and 60fps – a claim Microsoft can’t match – and the dearth of killer IPs available for the Wii U.

Interestingly, the PS4 has reached the 30 million mark two months faster than the PS2 – which as every gamer knows is still the best-selling console ever – and from the sounds of things, Sony isn’t resting on its laurels.

If further proof was ever needed that the PlayStation platform holder was dead set on winning this generation, simply clock an eye at some of the deals it’s offering for Black Friday in the West.

TechCrunch is reporting that ahead of the consumer chaos this Friday, Sony is offering a PS4 bundle with Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection Stateside for just $300 (around R4 300).

A quick glance at PriceCheck reveals that this Black Friday price-cut love hasn’t made its way to South Africa. Mind you, neither have the chaotic stampedes that accompany the West’s annual sale craze. With every grey cloud…
