Over 17 000 Limpopo matrics to rewrite Life Sciences exams after leak scandal

The Department of Basic Education ruled that 17 500 matric learners in the Vhembe district in Limpopo must rewrite their Life Sciences one and two exams following a recent cheating scandal that involved the papers being leaked in some schools before they were written.

This means the department is making good on a statement it had made in its original public briefing on the matter about learners across the district potentially having to rewrite the paper.

In a statement released today, the department said it appears the papers were shared between learners on WhatsApp.

It also established that the learners in Mpumalanga and Gauteng who had also received a leaked paper only had access to paper two, but didn’t say that any of the regions where this happened would have to rewrite the paper.

A total of 15 960 full-time and 1 540 part-time learners will rewrite the exams.

Life Science paper one will be written on 4th December, while paper two will be written on 8th December.

“The Department of Basic Education hopes to send out a clear message to learners and schools about the consequences of such malpractices,” the department said.

“The DBE is aware that some learners who did not cheat will have to rewrite the examinations, however this is the unfortunate consequence which is vital in maintaining the credibility of the NSC examinations in the country,” it added.
