Sammy’s 4K ATIV ultrabook gives the Macbook Pro a run for its money

South Korean electronics manufacturer, Samsung, recently unveiled its first-ever 4K capable notebook. Looking at its specifications, we may just have another contender for the title of “Macbook killer”.

The notebook in question is the ATIV Book 9 Pro which contains a discrete NVIDIA graphics processor that powers a 4K display.

However, this term “Macbook killer” can’t just be bandied about whenever a manufacturer releases a powerful notebook, so how does the ATIV compare to the other Surface Book and the highest-specced Macbook Pro?

Let’s take a look.

With the exception of its relatively small storage capacity and its dearth of RAM, the ATIV seems like it will be able to compete with both Microsoft and Apple – on paper, at least – but of course real world tests may reveal a different story, so keep that in mind.

Samsung claims the ATIV’s battery life is six and a half hours, but when you’re powering a 4K display, sacrifices must be made so expect that time to shorten a bit.

For those looking for something a bit cheaper and not as powerful, but which has a screen that turns through 360 degrees, the ATIV Book 9 Spin was also announced. The Spin boasts the same storage and memory capacity as the Pro, and features a 13.3inch QHD screen that’s powered by a slightly slower 2.5GHz Intel Core i7 processor. Its battery will apparently last up to seven hours.

Pricing in the US has been set at $1 599 (R22 195) for the ATIV Book 9 Pro, and the ATIV Book 9 Spin will retail for $1 399 (R19 419). We’ve requested that Samsung South Africa let us know how much the ATIV will retail for here and how soon we can expect it after its American launch this month, but at time of writing we have not heard back.
