adidas’ new shoe is partially 3D printed from ocean waste

adidas and Parley for the Oceans have created a new kind of shoe midsole that is 3D printed from plastic ocean waste.

Parley for the Oceans is an organisation fighting ocean pollution and the announcement of this new product comes during the COP21 Paris France Sustainable Innovation Forum 2015 which ended yesterday.

The midsole is made from recycled polyester and gill-nets – a type of netting usually arranged as a wall to trap fish.

This also forms part of adidas’ promise for sustainability. One such promise is that its retail stores will completely stop using plastic bags in the first three months of 2016. Amusingly, the company has also said it’s stopped using plastic bottles for its meetings in its headquarters in Germany. Well, it’s something.

As with the company’s previous attempt at 3D printing footwear, there’s no word yet as to when, or if, these shoes will ever make it into stores. We also have to wonder if adidas will release the files so consumers can print their own shoes.

In unrelated news: do you know that adidas (despite being a proper noun) is not capitalised?

As the source of this news was adidas themselves, we went to their site for information. Strangely, they never once capitalised their own brand name.

Convinced that a copywriter had not messed up countless times, we assume it’s another case of a brand’s “style guide” in which they strictly enforce how their name is used. Apple is most famous for this and their erroneous use of “i” in iPhone and “iOS” and “i Don’t know how English works.”
