You’ll soon be able to catch an Uber in Port Elizabeth

From this Thursday, residents in Port Elizabeth will be able to request a lift with Uber.

The company announced that it’s adding The Windy City to its platform, joining Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg and making the Eastern Cape the fourth province where it currently operates.

“After month’s worth of speculation, we are so excited to be launching in Port Elizabeth with our uberX product,”Alon Lits, General Manger of Uber Sub-Saharan Africa said. “This new service means that you can now enjoy a seamless, efficient ride at an extremely affordable price. The introduction of our service will change the way residents of PE go about their daily lives.”

According to Uber, around 10 000 account holders in Port Elizabeth have already been registered ahead of its official launch.

“Not only will the service make the destination more attractive and accessible to visitors but has the potential to increase employment opportunities adding to economic growth for our destination,” Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism CEO, Mandlakazi Skefile added.

Uber has also reduced its fares for the festive season, a ride in an uberX will now cost you as follows:

  • Base Fare R4.25  + R6.00 per kilometer + R0.60 per minute
  • Cancellation fee: R25.00
  • Minimum Fare: R17.00
