#ZumaMustFall becomes top trending hashtag on Twitter in SA

First Facebook, now Twitter. South Africans have taken to the micro-blogging platform to make their displeasure with President Jacob Zuma known as clearly as possible.

Following Zuma’s dismissal of Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene and the Rand entering freefall, South Africans have been tweeting so much criticism of the president using the hashtag #ZumaMustFall, that it’s now the number one trending topic on the site locally.

According to curator.twitter.com, in the past 24 hours 60,700 tweets have used the hashtag and currently around 3 000 tweet are flowing in every hour. This is pretty easy to believe if you set up a column to monitor the #ZumaMustFall in Tweetdeck.

President Zuma dismissed Nene in a brief statement last night, which on repeated readings seems to reveal absolutely no concrete reason behind his decision.

“I have decided to remove Mr Nhlanhla Nene as Minister of Finance, ahead of his deployment to another strategic position,” Zuma’s statement read. “Mr Nene has done well since his appointment as Minister of Finance during a difficult economic climate. Mr Nene enjoys a lot of respect in the sector locally and abroad, having also served as a Deputy Minister of Finance previously.”

Nene’s replacement is David Van Rooyen, who according to News 24, “has been described by economists as largely unknown, with little policy experience.”

Shortly after Nene’s dismissal, the Rand started falling faster than digested berries from a budgie’s backside. At the time of this writing it stands at R14.99 to the dollar and R22.75 to the pound. We hope that you all got your Christmas shopping done early.
