Showmax announces download feature for offline viewing

South African online streaming service, Showmax, has announced that it has added a download function to its Android app allowing subscribers to enjoy content offline.

The new feature will mean Showmax subscribers can use Wifi hotpspots and other “out-of-home” connectivity options to download content they can enjoy at a later stage.

Showmax General Manager, John Kotsaftis, spoke about the new feature in a statement saying, “many South Africans are still internet have-nots, and have been excluded from using services like ShowMax. While there may not be suitable internet access at home, more and more public WiFi services and other connectivity options are popping up”.

Users will be able to download a total of 25 TV shows and movies at a time to their Android tablet or smartphone. This content will be visible for 30 days through the Showmax Android app.

Once a TV show or movie has been started by the user they will have 48 hours to finish watching the content before it disappears though you can download the same episode or movie multiple times.

While streaming services are popular abroad, South Africa does have rather high internet data rates which means that internet at home is still seen as a luxury for many.

Offering a service such as this might help but we think your local coffee shop may get a bit flustered when every customer downloads the latest episode of Game of Thrones while they wait for their small coffee.

Whether downloading Showmax content to your Android tablet or smartphone while using a Telkom connection will trigger the zero rated data the two firms announced last week is unknown though we have reached out to Showmax for more information.

Apple fans will have to wait until next year to enjoy content offline though Showmax has said it is working hard to add the functionality.
