FNB testing uncapped Fixed LTE on select Connect users

FNB became the first South African bank to offer a cellular service earlier this year and it is expanding its connectivity footprint to include fixed internet access using LTE technology.

A statement has been sent out to select Connect users explaining that they have been selected to partake in a “no obligation free Fixed LTE Trial”.

The trial will run until 29th February 2016 and during this time the selected Connect customers will enjoy free uncapped internet over the LTE network though a fair use policy that will come into effect should users be gorging themselves a bit too much on the all-you-can-eat style internet.

What is interesting is that FNB has said that average line speeds will not dip below 10Mbps which is quite impressive for a service they are trialling and offering to customers for free, no matter how small that group might be.

Users will given an LTE router which according to MyBroadband is a Huawei CPE B315 LTE model. This will need to be returned once the trial concludes on 29th February 2016. Delivery and installation will be included in the trial free of charge and should users encounter any problems FNB has made a 24/7 Technical support number available.

While FNB does have close on 100 000 users on its Connect cellular network it will be interesting to see how it fares as an internet service provider especially as it will squaring off against providers such as Telkom who is enjoying the success and popularity of its Fixed LTE solution.
