Twitter issues warning about state-sponsored hackers

Twitter has warned at least 68 users that their account data may have been the target of state-sponsored hacks.

A report on Ars Technica states that the users in question, who include journalists, security researchers and activists, were sent an email by the micro-blogging site stating that their account may have been breached.

According to a letter sent to user @coldhakca, Twitter believes that the breach may have been orchestrated by persons “possibly associated with government” in an attempt to gather email addresses, IP addresses and phone numbers.

Of particular concern is that many users tweet under a pseudonym so as to remain relatively anonymous. Twitter does suggest using Tor to further protect your identity though Twitter itself requires that those accessing the site via Tor provide a mobile number for verification. A breach such as this would open up that information and kill a user’s anonymity.

Twitter now joins the ranks of Google and Facebook who both issued warnings to users who are suspected to be the target of state-sponsored attacks.

At this time it is unclear whether the hackers were able to gather any information and if they did, what information was taken, though the micro-blogging site has said it is investigating the incident.
