Soon you’ll be hailing Uber using Facebook Messenger

Facebook Messenger will soon boast a feature through which you can hail Uber.

Since making Messenger a compulsory companion app for smart devices, Facebook has been adding a host of features to the service such as allowing users to send money to friends and family.

The announcement of the new service was made through a blog post penned by Facebook Product Manager, Seth Rosenberg who said, “We’re expanding the services available to you with our launch of transportation on Messenger. With this new feature, you can request a ride from a car service without ever needing to download an extra app or leave a conversation.”

At the moment the service is only available in selected areas in the US and the only transport partner is Uber. According to Reuters this could expand to include Lyft and other territories in early 2016.

Once user’s have linked an existing Uber account to Messenger and requested an Uber using the Transportation option they will be sent driver updates and payment receipts via a private conversation with Uber. Users will also be given a free first ride up to a value of $20 (R297,61)

With Facebook currently testing its mobile personal assistant, M, this may be yet another feature that will be added to the assistant that promises to be more personal than offerings from Apple and Google.

That said, it remains to be seen how many people will be tempted to use Uber through Messenger when the Uber app works just fine..
