Flash replaced with HTML5 for Facebook videos

Adobe’s Flash is hanging on for dear life, but the long-used and much-disliked technology has been served another blow.

Many companies have opted to move away from Flash for online media and videos due to its limitations and security holes, and Facebook has just added its voice to this chorus.

Going forward, all videos uploaded to the social networking site will be played through HTML5 instead of Flash.

Facebook initially wanted to make the switch a while back, but most of the older browsers had issues with the new standard.

“That’s why we waited until today to ship the HTML5 player to all browsers by default, with the exception of a small set of them,” said Facebook’s Daniel Baulig in a blog post.

At the beginning of the month Adobe were pushing people to use other content creation tools instead of Flash.

It said that it “encourage content creators to build with new web standards” and suggested HTML5 as an alternative.

Baulig explained that most of the initial issues have now been sorted out, and by using HTML5 it will make things easier for people on the site.

“We finally reached a level we felt happy with shipping. Videos are an enriching way to connect with the world around you, and we’re happy we could make the Facebook video experience better,” he concluded.
