Star Wars: The Force Awakens rakes in nearly R17 million in opening weekend in SA

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens has made an astounding R16 443 117 between its opening on Wednesday December 16th and Sunday December 20th, after being viewed by 223 000  South Africa fans.

This comes after the grossed R4 726 865 on its opening day, and selling 2 299 tickets the day tickets for the it went on sale. Both of these achievements broke local records.

The Walt Disney Company Africa has stated that this is the biggest December opening in South African history.

Internationally, the film has brought in $517 million (R7.7 billion), around half of which comes from the United States, despite only opening there this past Friday.

With all these big numbers going around, many are speculating that The Force Awakens will become one of the top grossing films of all time. Its opening weekend numbers beat out Jurassic World’s, which is the third highest grossing film of all time and previously held the title of biggest US opening weekend.

We’ll have to wait and see if this juggernaut looses momentum as the year winds down, or keeps attractinb the hearts, minds and wallets of the world.
