Psychonauts 2 has successfully been funded

The cult classic Psychonauts is getting a sequel after more than a decade thanks to a successful crowd funding campaign by Tim Schafer and the team at Double Fine Productions.

Not only has the game raised $3 355 860 (more than R54 million with five days left in the campaign), but it managed to do that on the new Fig platforrm that Schafer helped start. What sets Fig apart from the Kickstarters and Indigogos of the world is the ability to invest in the games the platform helps fund.

In an update created today , Double Fine posted the “Final PSI Cadet Mission”; a way for fans of the game as well as backers to partake in a community event in the guise of a military operation.

The cheapest way to get Psychonauts 2 was the $33 (R531) early bird package, which has since been sold out. The cheapest option now is $39 (R627) for a digital download of both Psychonauts 1 and 2 on PC as well as the reward of having your name in the game’s credits. Additionally, adding in $18 (R289) nets you a PlayStation 4 / Xbox One version of the game.

The highest tier of backing amount is $10 000 (R160 953) which includes (among other things) a camping trip with the Psychonauts development team, as well as various digitial and physical goodies. There’s only 10 of these packages available, and five have already been taken.

With an expected release date in the Spring of 2018, time will tell if Psychonauts 2 will come into the world smoothly or be dogged by the infamous Double Fine mismanagement which has plagued their past crowd funded games.
