Our six favourite products from CES 2016

The news coming out of CES 2016 being held in Las Vegas, Nevada has been a mixed bag of really cool gadgets and less than exciting innovations.

With that said its hard not to let your inner geek jump with joy at news about Oculus Rift pricing (even if it is on the expensive side), drones that can carry people and Netflix launching (almost) everywhere.

There is always so much to see it can be hard to get a handle on it all but we’ve kept notes and these are some of the cooler things we saw coming out of CES this year.

LG Signature OLED G6 television

According to CES attendees the panel on this TV is as thin as four credit cards.

One of our favourite TV’s being shown off this year is LG’s impossibly thin OLED TV. The panel is just 2.57mm thick and includes a sound bar that has been tuned by Harmon Kardon. There will be a choice between a 65 inch and 77 inch screen size once the product is launched in the second half of this year. According to LG this TV meets the UHD Alliance specifications for a UHD Premium TV.

MSI Vortex PC Tower

Under the hood of this rather Mac Pro-looking cylinder there is something a bit special. MSI has crammed a 6th Generation Intel Core i7 6700K, up to 64GB of DDR4 memory and then the pièce de résistance, up to two NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 graphics cards in SLI. These are not mobile graphics cards but rather the full sized GPU designed for mobile applications NVIDIA announced last year.

Pricing for this unassuming yet beastly PC is expected to start at $2 000 (R32 020.47) and go up to $3 000 (R48 030,71) for the top of the range model. Good news for South Africans, MSI has told us that the Vortex will be coming to South Africa.

ASUS MB169C+ portable USB monitor

We’ve seen small, portable monitors before but this is the first one that uses a USB Type-C for power and video transmission. The IPS display measures 15.6 inches and the whole monitor weighs just 800g. The monitor is capable of a maximum resolution of 1 920×1 080p but unfortunately there is no news about availability just yet.

This portable monitor uses one USB Type-C port to carry power and a video signal.

Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator

While we’ve never really seen the draw in having a smart display on your fridge, with the reveal of the Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator, there must be a demand somewhere.

Ask yourself, do you really need a fridge that connects to the internet?

Obviously it will keep your food and drinks cool but it also has connectivity features that let you check the contents of your fridge while you’re shopping via a camera inside the unit. The 21.5 inch Full HD LCD display allows users to order groceries, create works of art or surf the web using the Tizen operating system.

Aorus X5 v5 notebook

There were notebooks in droves at CES this year and the revamp of the Aorus X5 caught our attention almost immediately. The notebook will house either one NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M and a 4K display or two NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M in SLI which will drive a 2880x1620p display equipped with the NVIDIA G-Sync technology.

The X5 v5 will force you to decide between a single or dual GPUs.

The X5 v5 will also be the first to feature the Aorus Fusion keyboard which features per-key back lighting. This allows for illumination of individual keys such as WASD for gamers.

Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Yoga

Thin, flexible and a few features that make it seem that Lenovo was thinking when they create this notebook.

Combining the slim form factor of the Yoga series with the Thinkpad seems like a bad idea but the result could be quite interesting. The latest notebook from Lenovo features the worlds first OLED display in a notebooks, an Intel Skylake processor as well as the famous 360 degree hinge. There is a new feature that retracts the keys so that if you’re using the notebook as a tablet the keys don’t catch on anything. Quite smart actually.
