Questions asked about Facebook Safety Check in Jakarta

As attacks believed to be linked to terrorists continue in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, the absence of Facebook’s Safety Check is raising eyebrows.

The Facebook feature was developed to let people tell friends and family they are safe in the event of a natural disaster. While it was intended for use during natural disasters, the feature was used last year when terrorist attacks rocked the French capital.

According to Tech in Asia, threats received by police have led them to believe that an unidentified terrorist group is behind multiple bomb blasts that left four people dead today.

Facebook drew criticism last year for not activating Safety Check during bombings that happened in Beirut, Lebanon which claimed the lives of 40 people, but switched the service on the day after, when terrorists attacked Paris.

Despite Mark Zuckerberg having said that Safety Check would be activated during more human disasters,. This morning, critics have pointed out, Safety Check wasn’t turned on in Jakarta.

We’ve asked Facebook representatives in South Africa for comment, and we will update this story when we’ve heard from them.

News outlet e27 is reporting that in the absence of Facebook’s Safety Check, Indonesians have turned to Twitter and other social networks and are using the hashtag #SafetyCheckJKT to let friends and family know they are safe.
