This is a functional, 3D printed micrometer

We’ve seen our share of 3D printed hammers and wrenches, but rarely do we come across precision tools. A user on Reddit recently submitted this micrometer to the 3D printing portion of the site.

The micrometer (also called a screw gauge) is used to precisely measure smaller components. This micrometer has a travel distance of 2.5 inches (63,5 millimetres) and is marked at every five thousandth of an inch.

At the heart of a good micrometer is an extremely accurate, calibrated screw. Unfortunately, the initial version is somewhat off: consistently measuring objects 12 thousandths too short and then having a play of around 3 thousandths of a millimetre. While that means this micrometer isn’t nearly as accurate as a regular metal one, it does come close enough to be impressive.

Luckily, the creator admitted to not putting in enough time to properly calibrate the tool as this was only the first try done for fun.

If you’d like to make your own, the full files are available on Thingiverse for you to download, mess with and ultimately print.

While you could do it yourself, there are plans to make future versions in both a smaller size as well as ones that use metric units.
