Fujifilm’s long-awaited X-Pro2 comes with a R28k+ price tag

Hard as it is to believe, Fujifilm’s X-Pro1 is four years old this year and it seems, on paper at least, that Fujifilm has used this time to polish its successor, the X-Pro2, to a bright shine.

So what have we been waiting all this time for? For one thing, a much larger sensor: the X-Pro2 houses an X-Trans CMOS III sensor that can shoot images at up to 24MP, which The Verge says is a first for a Fujifilm X-Series camera.

Autofocus has been given a substantial bump up in the X-Pro2 as well. The sensor now uses a hybrid autofocus system where 77 points use phase-detection autofocus and combine with an extra 196 points to give the camera a massive 273 points of autofocus.

Fans should be pleased with the addition of a hybrid optical and electronic viewfinder. A live view screen can be placed at the bottom of the viewfinder so photographers can check exposure and adjust focus on the whole frame, or just a portion of it.

Maximum mechanical shutter speed in the X-Pro2 has doubled since the X-Pro1 to 1/8 000, and flash sync speed has been increased to 1/250 seconds.

Unfortunately the X-Pro2 is unable to shoot video at UHD resolution (3 840×2 160), but it is able to record video at 1080p at 60 frames per second. That’s a substantial upgrade over the 1080p at 24 frames per second the X-Pro1 was capable of.

Should this all sound great to you, you might want to start saving: Fujifilm has put a price tag of $1 699.95 (R28 207,42) on the body of the X-Pro2. If we were to guess, that means it’ll likely come in at over R30k by the time it’s available in South Africa thanks to import duties, retailer mark-ups and exchange rate fluctuations.
