UnoTelly reassures Netflix users in South Africa

The launch of Netflix in South Africa quickly turned from joy to disappointment for UnoTelly users in the country, as Netflix said that internationally it will be clamping down on VPN subscribers.

In theory, Netflix wants to prevent subscribers from accessing content that is not available in certain countries.

In a statement, Netflix said last week that “…in coming weeks, those using proxies and unblockers will only be able to access the service in the country where they currently are. We are confident this change won’t impact members not using proxies.”

UnoTelly has (somewhat) reassured people that the service will continue to work. By using UnoTelly subscribers can circumvent the region-locking of a lot of content, which South African users have been using for year to access the US and UK Netflix services.

“At UnoTelly, we believe in an open and border-free Internet. We are confident that we can continue to deliver quality service to our loyal and supportive users, UnoTelly representative Kostas Polichronos told htxt.africa.

He also added that in case Netflix actually manages to block international connections to the US or UK services, UnoTelly users shouldn’t be impacted.

“We have backup plans, and our users will be able to continue accessing access Netflix content outside their local Netflix region,” he explained.

This is not the first time that Netflix has said that it will come after users of VPN services and proxies, as it has come under increasing pressure from content distributors to tighten up on region-locking.
