Is Apple entering the VR market?

There is no doubt that virtual reality is becoming one of the hottest tech commodities of our time.

Samsung, Oculus and Sony have all made rather big pushes into the market, and now it seems that Apple is about to join the party.

The tech giant has been quiet about its own VR plans, but the company recently hired VR specialist Doug Bowman to join its team, according to Financial Times, at least. Professor Doug Bowman, to give him his full title.

According to Virginia Tech University, Bowman “is a Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Center for Human-Computer Interaction. He is the principal investigator of the 3D Interaction Group, focusing on the topics of three-dimensional user interface design and the effects of fidelity in virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR) systems.”

That is a rather mouthful, but it is clear that it has at least hired the right man for the job.

Bowman is no stranger to working with tech companies, as he was one of the first recipients of a $100 000 Hololens research grants from Microsoft, to be used for the “collaborative analysis of large-scale mixed reality data.”

Apple has never said that it wants to – or has plans to – seriously enter the VR race, but by giving Bowman a corner office in Cupertino, it is rather clear that Apple is at least investigating to option of developing something VR-related for Apple. It has in the past though, filed patent applications for VR tech.

Oh, and don’t be surprised if the product is called Apple VR. We should probably trademark that as soon as possible. BRB.
