Outa to challenge Aarto amendments before Parliamentary portfolio committee today

The Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (Outa) will meet with the Parliamentary portfolio committee on transport today to discuss regulatory amendments to the controversial etoll system.

At the heart of the meeting will be the proposed amendments to the Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (Aarto) Act. Chief Executive Officer of Outa, Wayne Duvenhage, believes amendments to this act will grant the Road Traffic Infringement Agency the ability to include etoll infringements in judgments.

Spokesperson for Outa, John Clarke explained the implications of this to EWN saying, “the last step that they want to try to implement is linked to the renewal of drivers licenses.”

“We think it is only going to make things worse for the province because it will just mean people won’t pay for their license discs as well”, Clarke concluded.

Other issues that Outa will be be bringing before the committee include concerns about the collection of etolls and possible collusion in the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project.

Earlier this week the National Treasury announced that it would cover Sanral’s annual revenue shortfall for the next 22 years, a total of R8.5 billion.

This shortfall comes as a result of a 60% discount being given to motorists who settle their outstanding accounts as part of the etoll dispensation which ends in April this year.
