Meet the machine that won’t give you a condom if you’re too drunk

We can’t help but wonder who asked for a condom dispensing machine that won’t work if you’ve had too much to drink.

You read that correctly. Online dating site Match has backed the Johnny Be Good condom dispenser which will not dispense a condom if you’re over the legal limit.

Simply breathe into the machine and it will decide whether you are deserving of a condom based on your level of sobriety.

The machine was developed after Match found that during an average date, three drinks are consumed to calm the nerves. The UK site Metro reports that as many as a third of singles are not sober when sleeping with somebody the first time.

So less drunken encounters you’ll regret the next morning? Sounds like a pretty good idea right?

We don’t really think so.

Unlike fitting a breathalyser into a car which can actually save a life, denying somebody access to a condom because they’re drunk could cause them to abandon the pursuit of happiness, but is more likely to encourage them to take a risk and have unprotected sex.

“It is important that we encourage safer sex, ensuring everyone has access to condoms, especially if they are under the influence of alcohol,” said expert on HIV, sexual health and reproductive health, Professor Jane Anderson from Public Health told The Metro.

“Denying people access to condoms could lead to riskier sexual behaviour, increasing the risk of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections”, Anderson concluded.

We think its a bad idea but what say you? Would you like a machine to protect you from regret the morning after or would you rather just be safe? Let us know in the comments below.
