Video on demand service VIDI is officially dead

South African video on demand (VOD) service VIDI, which belongs to Time Media Group, is no longer accessible to users according to a notice on the VIDI website.

The only notice users seem to have received is a banner on the VIDI homepage which reads “VIDI is transforming, watch this space for coming details”.

The service which launched in September 2014 offered a VOD service similar to Netflix as well as a rental service, reminiscent of the service offered by DSTV’s Box Office where users can rent Hollywood blockbusters for an additional fee.

A Whois search no longer lists Times Media Group as the owners of the “vidi.co.za” domain but rather a wireless application service provider known as Smartcall Technology Services.

The company lists SMS competitions, voting lines, chat services and content downloads among its services, which may be why the VIDI website is still live and running new competition to win yet another car.

Earlier this year we compared the offering of Netflix, ShowMax, VIDI and OnTapTV. To do this, we had to sign up for an account with every service. Even with an active VIDI subscription we weren’t given notice of the service shutting down, and any emails sent to that effect were never received.

According to the notice, the service became unavailable from the 26th January so it’s hard to be upset given subscribers only seem to be waking up to the closure of the service now.

We’ve reached out to Smartcall Technology Services to find out what the future holds and we will update this story accordingly.
