Speed and quality abound in the R100 000 Canon EOS-1D X Mark II

Professional photographers will be salivating at the news of the latest Canon flagship DSLR to hit the market and they should be.

The eye-watering amount of features this baby contains has even us amateur shutterbugs eager to get our hands on it.

The first thing to hit us like a ton of bricks is the new 20.2MP full frame CMOS sensor that Canon has fitted into the EOS-1D X Mark II.

The Mark II also boasts a much larger ISO range, the base 100 – 51200 can even be expanded to 50 – 409600. Additional improvements have been made to the 61-point auto-focus (AF) system which now features 41 cross-type AF points.

Canon has also said that for the first time, when shooting with selected extenders and lenses all 61 points will be available to photographers. The new AI Servo AF III+ has been included to compliment this AF system improving the sensitivity in scenes where the subject moves quickly – great for taking action shots. Sports photographers take note!

The speed continues

The Mark II is able to capture 14 frames per second with full auto-focus/auto exposure (AF/AE) tracking in RAW format. Newly installed CFast 2.0 card compatibility means that photographers can capture up to 170 RAW images or as many JPEGs as the card can handle while continuously shooting at high speed.

All of this is great but our favourite feature is the ability to shoot UHD video (4 096×2 160) at up to 60 frames per second. Canon has also said that Full HD (1 920×1 080) video can be recorded at up to 120 frames per second. This makes the Mark II ideal for shooting scenes in slow motion.

Come to think of it, there really is very little about this camera that isn’t making us want one. Files can be transferred over Wifi using the WFT-E8 wireless file transmitter or over a wired ethernet connection (yes, this camera has a LAN port) or using SuperSpeed USB 3.0

The Mark II is expected to land in the US in April and prices are starting at $5999.00 (R961 093,95) but expect that to increase when the snapper lands here.
