While free-to-air stations such as public broadcast stations, community channels and any other unencrypted digital TV signals will be able to be accessed through the decoder. That said, GOtv is an encrypted service which will require a subscription to enjoy.

There is a once-off cost of R699 which will get your the GOtv Decoder and one month free subscription to GOtv Value, this can be downgraded at the end of the month.

A UHF antenna is also recommened, this is being sold with the GOtv decoder and is known as the GOtennea and will retail for R200.

Existing M-net subscribers can go digital

GOtv will be using the same spectrum that M-net has been using since its inception in South Africa. Existing Mnet customers will be able to purchase a GOtv decoder and enjoy M-net as a digital service however Multichoice has said that no new subscribers will be afforded this opportunity just yet.

“Our analogue Mnet subscribers will still be able to enjoy the service as is for now, despite the rollout of digital terrestrial television, this is a period of dual illumination and when we make the shift to a complete digital solution we will inform our Mnet subscribers accordingly,” said Yolisa Phahle, Chief Executive Officer at Mnet

Customers looking to open a GOtv subscription will need to check whether they live in an area that is covered by the GOtv signal.

Do do this customers will need to dial *120*468872# from any mobile phone and follow the prompts. Alternatively customers can visit the GOtv website to check coverage in their area.

GOtv decoders are available at OK Furniture and Game stores from today with availability at Makro and other retailers expected soon.
