Mumford & Sons will be banging out their tunes for Gauteng fans this weekend, but while you are tapping your feet to ‘Little Lion Man’, your cash will be all but useless at the gig.

The show, which is being held in Pretoria on Saturday and Sunday, is a totally cashless event, meaning that you will need a bank card enabled to make contactless payments.

The way it works, is that you simply tap your card on the till point and the amount is deducted from your account. No PINs, no signing, no waiting. It’s simply tap and go.

First National Bank, as well as some other banks, started issuing contactless payment cards a while back, but no retail vendors have been able to implement.

The easiest way to determine if your card is enabled, is to check if it has a contactless payment symbol in the top right corner – similar to a WiFi signal turned on its side.

“All banks in South Africa offer this facility, so if your card doesn’t show this, please go in-to your local branch and request a new card. You will be able to tap and go on purchases around the concert with this card,” radio station 94.7 explained.

If your card has the symbol, you are good to go. If not, there is nothing to worry about, as there are ways and means around it.

If you can’t get a new card in time for the show, you will be able to buy event specific cashless cards for R200. The card itself costs R10, and it has a value of R190 pre-loaded.

For those who want a piece of concert memorabilia, you can buy a Mumford & Sons branded pre-loaded card for R300. The card costs R30, and the value pre-loaded is R270.

Both cards will be on sale on the day at Recharge/Reloading stations.

But what if you deplete your cashless card? Well, just head on to one of the same stations and top up. That can be done with regular cash or a normal bank card.

Don’t worry if you spend less than what is on the card, as there is a way to get the money back after the show has ended.

“Using the cashless card (Generic or branded Mumford & Sons card), the value can only be used at any of the Mumford & Sons South Africa shows,” 94.7 said. “Any value left on the card after the shows can be ‘withdrawn’ by sending the card number to the number on the back of the card. Details will be sent via SMS with an ATM pin code to ‘withdraw’ your money from your nearest ABSA branch.”
