Malfunctioning gov’t IT system leaves 100k TVET graduates without certificates

A system glitch has left over 100 000 graduates from Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges in limbo over receiving their qualification certificates.

South Africa’s education and training control body, Umalusi revealed this in parliament recently, stating that although y the State Information and Technology Agency (SITA) has managed to cut down the certificate backlog in half as a result of ongoing issues, it was still left with 102 000 un-issued certificates.

In August last year, the backlog was at 236 000 and SITA had resolved to completely clear it by January.

According to Umalusi, the colleges exam system, which hosts every single individual exam for 252 subjects, is battling with inconsistencies and weaknesses, resulting in instability.

Some exam markers are also reportedly not qualified or don’t have enough knowledge to correctly mark exams.

On top of these problems, the controlling body also noted that some of the course material being taught at TVET colleges is outdated and therefore a setback for students who may be denied employment because they aren’t up to scratch with advancements in their industry of study.

TVET colleges and government have been criticised in the past for their alleged inability to provide courses in line with international standards that would make graduates employable and able to compete in the working world.

The DA said Ministser of Higher Education and Training, Blade Nzimande, must find an urgent solution to these problems to avoid more backlogs and the unemployability of students.
