LG announces smartphones that do one thing really well

Ahead of Mobile World Congress next week, LG has unveiled two new smartphones which have one really amazing feature each.

The two features are the camera and the display respectively, and as such the new smartphones have been given the names X cam and X screen. We’re not sure if we should applaud, or roll our eyes.

According to Juno Cho, President of LG Electronics, these new smartphones will give users their favourite feature without having to break the bank.

“We think there’s room for devices that do one thing very well and that customers shouldn’t have to pay for features that they don’t want,” Cho said in a statement.

The handsets are very different and yet also very similar; let’s see if the keen-eyed among you can spot the differences.

X cam X screen
Display 5.2inch FHD In-cell Touch 4.93inch HD In-cell Touch and 1.76inch LCD
Chipset 1.14GHz Octa-Core 1.2GHz Quad-Core
Camera Rear 13MP and 5MP 13MP
Camera Front 8MP 8MP
Memory 2GB 2GB
Storage 16GB 16GB
Battery 2 520mAh 2 300mAh
Operating System Android 6.0 Marshmallow Android 6.0 Marshmallow

For all of those that spotted two rear cameras on the X cam and two displays on the X screen, well done.

Having two snappers on the X cam’s rear means that pictures could potentially look spectacular, but we’ll hold off on making that claim until we see them in action next week.

The X screen boasts an always-on secondary display which allows users to answer calls, and access frequently used apps without interfering with what is happening on the main display.

As cool as two displays does sound, we question whether the world really needs an extra 1.72inch LCD display to see who just tweeted you. Once again though, we really do need to get a hands-on to see how useful this is, if at all.

Our cynicism aside, we’re not all that surprised by LG’s move to focus on key features for certain types of people. The LG G4 series did that surprisingly well, especially the G4 Stylus which was one of our favourite smartphones of 2015.

While we mumble to ourselves about not being able to have our cake and eat it, we look forward to seeing where this fits in with LG’s latest flagship phone which is scheduled to be revealed next week.
